Also known as a transom light, fanlights are an additional glass panel placed above windows, French doors, and front doors. The panel is visually separated from the main window or door by a structurally supportive transom bar. Fanlights can be added in the configurator upon product purchase as an additional option and come as part of the final manufactured product.
There are several reasons to add a fanlight above new windows and doors, such as that they:
Brighten interiors
Add character to entrances
Enhance ventilation
Match traditional styles
One of the key reasons customers decide to add fanlights has to do with design and creating welcoming interiors. Take a front door where the sash panel has no glass inserts, for example. Here a fanlight allows light into the entrance area and creates an inviting entrance, making the hallway appear more spacious.
For full glass windows and French doors, on the other hand, that already create bright interiors, fanlights can add character, elegance, and be configured to fit with traditional architecture.
At windows24.com we specialise in highly personalised windows and doors.
As dimensions are an important part of this, our user-friendly configurator has a specific size section displaying the maximum and minimum width and height ranges for new windows and doors.
Interactive boxes then provide space for customers to add their required dimensions once our step-by-step instructions guides for measuring have been followed.
In the case of fanlights, the configurator uniquely allows customers to determine how the total door or window height should be divided between the fanlight and base product. Any technical constraints or complex dimension requests are also highlighted upon input.
For customers after particularly wide French doors or large windows, we also offer the option of having multiple sashes topped by a single fanlight, which will increase the possible dimension ranges.
When used with French doors and windows, our fanlights can be an ideal solution for additional ventilation.
Selecting a tilt opening mechanism for the fanlight will mean that it can be opened ajar, for example.
This is a secure option, which can create a throughflow of air and helps to prevent mould from forming in bathrooms and kitchens, for instance.
For those purchasing front doors or who would prefer to keep costs to a minimum, a standard fixed fanlight option is also available.
Whatever option you choose, a range of quality glazings and further customisable features are available to choose from.
Whether chosen for a new front door, window, or French door, at windows24.com fanlight glazing can be customised to meet a variety of personal design preferences and functional requirements. The glass will match the structure of the glazing chosen for the rest of the door or window.
Our standard double glazing, featuring two panes of glass, provides good standard thermal insulation. For those after enhanced thermal performance, triple glazing is also available.
Featuring three panes, this thick glass prevents the undesirable exit or entry of heat via conduction to maintain a comfortable interior temperature and save on energy bills. In terms of sound insulation, purpose-designed noise reduction glass is then also available for windows and French door fanlights.
Alongside insulation, various safety options are available for door and window glazing.
The glazing can be classified as “laminated safety glass”, for example, if additional PVB foil interlayers are added between panes. The foil increases the glazing’s impact resistance and will hold glass in place, preventing it from shattering out, if it should break under very high force.
Design and privacy are further important aspects to consider when purchasing products with fanlights. At windows24.com, we therefore offer a range of different ornamental and structured surface finishes.
While the popular Master-Carré® option adds a particularly decorative character, the Satinato variant creates a frosted finish that provides an increased degree of privacy without compromising on plentiful entry of light.
In our comprehensive configurator, further features can be added to ensure perfectly tailored fanlights. A variety of RAL colours and quality wood-replica decors can be chosen for windows and doors. This tone will then be applied to the frame surrounding the fanlight and its transom bar to ensure a harmonious finish.
For customers after a traditional look or for those needing to meet listed building requirements, glazing bars can also be added and their number and placement specified. There is then the further option to add side panels to doors with fanlights. This combination can create a particularly welcoming opening and further brightens interiors.
