Window sills are visually appealing, functional accessories for every type of window. For their part, window sill holders are used to make your window ledges even more secure. The overhangs of window sills are designed to protect the facade render located directly under your windows from the elements – a particularly important feature for the exterior of your home. Exterior window sills can also be made very eye-catching indeed if you cover them with such attractive decorations as flowers or other ornaments. When fitting a window sill, make sure to use window sill holders if the overhang is sufficiently large.
Exterior window sills are available with a wide range of overhangs. As a general rule, you should fit window sill holders to overhangs of 150 mm and above to ensure the stability of your window sill. Nevertheless, it can be advisable to install window sill holders regardless of the size of the overhang if your sills will be put to such uses as holding heavy objects, for example. Window sill holders are generally made of metal and are installed directly onto the masonry of your home (i.e. they are fixed onto the facade using screws.) Window sill holders should be installed by a professional to avoid negatively impacting your thermal insulation via the creation of thermal bridges, for example. Any such thermal bridges would be established directly on or within the masonry itself, thus allowing condensation to form. If this happens, mould could start to grow. Removing it from masonry is a costly affair. It is therefore advisable to use window sill holders with thermal breaks so as not to impact the thermal insulation of your facade.
Window sill holders are used because window sills often have to carry heavy loads. These holders are fixed to the facade at specific intervals to distribute the weight in an optimal fashion and ensure the level of stability required. The distance between the holders should not exceed 1 m. The guidelines recommend what is known as the "RAL installation distance" of 60 cm. Furthermore, the distance between the two outermost window sill holders and the ends at the sides of the sill itself must not exceed 40 cm. This allows the holders to provide optimum levels of stability.
Thermally separated window sill holders protect against thermal bridges and ensure the integrity of your thermal insulation system.
Proofing your home against driving rain is thus particularly important, as not only the facade but also the windows themselves can be affected by rain that is thrown off its vertical path by the wind. As a result, we stock a selection of products for both embrasures and window sills that address this problem. Finally, combining such products with an anti-drum coating will make sure the rain does not get on your nerves, either.
